Charles Samuel Stokes (1818-1880/1899) was born in London in 1818, the son of Charles Scott Stokes, a solicitor residing in Streatham Common, London, and the brother of Scott Nasmyth Stokes. He was educated at St Paul's School—entering in 1827 and later serving as a Campden Exhibitioner in 1837—before being admitted as a pensioner to Trinity College, Cambridge, on November 14, 1836, at the age of 18. He matriculated in October 1837 and was awarded a Perry Exhibitioner position in 1838, though he ultimately left the university without completing a degree.
Stokes's time at Cambridge and his subsequent path were marked by notable transitions. He was a member of the elite intellectual discussion society, the Cambridge Apostles. Around 1841, he was said to have been sent down from the university following his conversion to Catholicism and his marriage to an Irish dancing girl, with other accounts noting his formal entry into the Roman Catholic Church occurring around 1845. His ecclesiastical connections later intersected with prominent figures of the era, appearing in P.J. Barnwell's notes and Dessain's volumes on John Henry Newman.
Professionally, Stokes worked as a private banker. By 1873, his career and life took him to Spanish America, where he lived and worked until his death. Historical records present conflicting accounts regarding his final years, with some sources dating his death in South America to 1880, while alternative volumes place it in 1899.
